ACA Resource: A Deeper Understanding — Implications of Race for the Future of Camp

Though an older resource (it’s from 2013), this piece from American Camp Association’s Camping Magazine is an excellent starting place for conversations with your staff and board about how your program can authentically (and joyfully!) serve different audiences. The sidebar, which lists nine examples of daily conditions/advantages that white people in the United States enjoy just by being members of the dominant race, could be a particularly useful reflection.

We have also been taught not to see color, but to assume all children are alike. This is “cultural blindness” on the Cultural Proficiency Continuum, and it is a major problem with teachers and other childcare specialists.
